a new take on earthy tones
For a modern extension to a Georgian-style home in Toronto, our design approach was carefully curated to strike a sensitive balance between traditional detailing and a contemporary mood of casual warmth, comfort and simplicity. To harmonize with the original interior, we selected natural finishes almost exclusively, working with an earthy palette of oil-treated flooring, honed and leathered marble, anodized aluminum, and copper. The material selections are destined to age gracefully, too. Over the coming years, new layers of tactility will evolve as the family accumulates objects, lived experiences, and, along with that, the various scuff marks and scratches that inevitably become part of a well-loved home.
In my view, the interplay between old and new is expressed most effectively in the door, window and wall trims. Some have been left just as they were found. Others have been modified to a more pared-down form to create thoughtful and considered transitions. It is a small gesture but an elegant one that reveals a sense of respect for the history of the house.
Our clients were equally passionate about designing an interior that can outlast trends. We also worked with a contracting team with a deep appreciation of excellent workmanship. When circumstances align as they did with this project, our studio is given an amazing opportunity to push boundaries, and, as designers, that is when we are at our most creative. We’re looking forward to sharing more about this stunning house once the new landscaping begins to establish.
